First ice outing of the year
I managed to sneak away from home for a few minutes Friday to get out on the ice. I took the time before leaving to re spool one of my panfish rods with some new 4lb bioline. I was interested to see how it was going to perform under ice fishing conditions.

First impression has been good. Low memory kept coiling down to almost nothing. That made it easier to get my small teardrop down to depth. It also unfortunately makes for the occasional line jumping off a small spinning rod. Don't fill the spool to the rim to help avoid that problem.
The ice was about 5" thick on my early ice lake. One other guy was out with a small portable. Many of the other area lakes still have small open spots but Haften Lake is safe and ready for action. Make sure you do your homework and take the necessary precautions before heading out on the metro area lakes.
I drilled a few holes in a straight line running from about 8 feet out to about 18. Water clarity was very poor and did not allow me to utilize my AquVu at all. I lowered it down a couple holes and couldn't see a thing. Since I didn't bring my LCD finder with, this left me a little blind for finding fish. I dropped my line down a couple of the holes but with a strong wind and single digit temps I decided I had learned what I needed. Plenty of ice to fish but next time bring the finder and the portable to get out of the cold.
It was a good little shake down for the first outing of the year. No fish but at least I got a line wet.

I am not so sure biodegradability is something I want to look for in a fishing line.

I can see that point. The product is said to last 10 months to a year without any loss of performance. I personally change my line at least that often anyway. The trend in the industry is towards lessening our impact on the resource. I know every year I have to dig line out of my trolling motor and sometimes my main motor as well. This is just one step in doing the right thing for the environment.
